"The topic for this Fun Monday is summer memories. Besides a few of your favorite summer memories, I'd like to hear what summer means to you. Is summer all about fireworks, watermelon seed wars, catching fireflies, days at the lake, family vacations, or the perfect swimsuit? What sights, smells, sounds, tastes, feelings do you associate with summer?"
Usually, FunMonday is a prompt for a sharing of pictures from around the house, on photostrolls, etc. This week's FunMonday is a little different, however. As you can see above, today's challenge is more of a writing exercise.
Well, here we go!:
Some of my favorite summer memories:
* shelling peas with my family
* running and jumping onto my "slip n' slide"
* staying up and sleeping late
* playing in my playhouse and on our swing set with my sissy
* going to Montgomery and having lunch with Dad
* sleep overs
* swimming
One summer, the year I was 17 and my sister, 13, my parents went to Texas on a business trip. We were allowed to stay by ourselves, since I could drive.
Anyway, one day it rained fit to beat the band. My sissy and I put on some old clothes and ran out into the ran. We slipped in the mud, slided around, had a mud fight. We had the best time! To this day, it is one of my favorite memories I have of our childhood together.
We also watched t.v. and rolled one another's hair. We drove up to the gas station and got sodas and snacks. We made spaghetti and loaded it down with Parmesan cheese. We stayed up late. We "goofed off" and had the best time! It's a summer I'll never forget.
What sights, sounds, tastes, etc. do I associate with summer?
* crickets at night
* the "ozone" smell before rain
* sunsets with a million clouds
* charcoal
* birdseed
* mugginess
* dragonflies
* fresh tomatoes, peas, squash, strawberries
* homemade ice cream
* salads
* lemonade
* sleeping with the windows up
* box fans
* Six Flags
* hummingbirds
* grill-outs and barbeques
"That beautiful season the Summer!
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light;
and the landscape Lay as if new created
in all the freshness of childhood."
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I had forgotten about the smell of charcoal and all the wonderful fresh veggies and fruit. I miss being able to sleep in during the summer!
I love the memory of you and your sister during your "parent-free" adventure. How fun!!
Happy Monday!
Love the quote by Longfellow. All the Fun Monday posts so far have given me FlashBacks of my summer memories. Yours...no different.
Mud fights. Spagetti. Hair rolling. You're a girl after my own heart!
fresh tomatoes, peas, squash, strawberries OH YES!!! Add raspberries too.
My parents would never have left us at that age, you really did have lots of fun (I think my sis and I may have done bodily harm to each other if left alone for too long)!
The mud fight sounds like so much fun.
Playing in the rain with your younger sister, what a cool sibling you are. Yes, playing in the rain is a lovely memory.
Texas in the summer...The Best!!
Spaghetti with loads of parmesan, *sigh*, I miss being able to eat stuff like that!
Wonderful summer post.
Now I really want some homemade ice cream...
I loved playing in the rain, that's one of my summer memories too! You have great memories here, that summer with your sister sounds like a blast!
OH, and thanks for my button, right back atcha lady!
Oh I LOVE Longfellow -- perfect from this post;).
Those are lovely memories with your sissy;).
Some I can relate to but many on your list were rather exotic to me as my childhood was long ago and far away. But yours were all good ones.
My kids liked the Slip and Slides and the sprinkler was pretty good before then. Also - the smell of charcoal grills strikes my fancy as a summer smell. Nice thoughts!
Great memories, I'm having so much fun reading all of these Summer posts!
you wrapped it up nicely.
The mud fight should be an annual event!
I forgot about Slip 'n' Slides. All these memories people are sharing are bringing back more of my own.
My kids are almost 17, 15, 13, and 10 1/2, but they still like to play in the mud, paint each other with it, and have mud wars.
