So, I wanted some chocolate syrup to spread over my dessert tonight. I had none in the house (fridge).
So instead of forking over $3.50 (which I don't have) for the stuff in the dark bottle, I made my own. I've made the brown goodness before and luckily found my old recipe card.
Here's the recipe:
Jen's Homemade Chocolate Syrup (makes 30 ounces)
1 cup cocoa powder (MUST be unsweetened!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
2 cups sugar
1/4 tsp. salt (pinch)
1 cup cold water
1 TB vanilla
Combine cocoa and sugar and blend in a medium saucepan. Whisk until all the lumps in the mixture are gone. (or as close to gone as you can get!) Add water and salt. Whisk until well blended. Cook over medium heat, bringing mixture to a boil. Keep boiling (rolling bubbles) until thick, about 15-20 minutes. Stir constantly to preventing mixture from "boiling over". Remove thickened chocolate from heat. Allow to cool on counter top, uncovered. When mixture is cool, add vanilla and stir well. Mixture will be thick, dark and yummilious!
By the way, this recipe costs about $0.90 to make. Compare that with the $3.50 or so for the Hershey's(r) chocolate syrup.
Hope you try this recipe! It's wonderful on ice cream, mixed in milk, for hot chocolate or as a cheesecake topping. (which I'm doing tonight!)
YUM!!!

This is great, and I will *definitely* try it. They don't sell chocolate syrup here, and although I don't use it very often, sometimes I have a craving...and this will save my mom sending me yet another American treat ;)
Oh, yummy. Now i need to go in the kitchen. Or, do i have some chocolate.... Thanks for sharing the reciepe.
